Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to. - Matthew 28:19-20 (New International Version)

The Great Commission

The phrase "make disciples of all the nations" is a direct command from Jesus Christ to his followers, known as the Great Commission. Found in Matthew 28:19–20, it is a foundational principle for many Christian denominations, calling believers to actively spread the Christian faith and teach its principles to people around the world.

"Go... to all the nations":

The command to "go" is a call to action, but the word for "nations" in the original Greek (\(ethnē\)) also refers to "ethnic groups". This means the mission is not just geographical but also cross-cultural, reaching every people group with the Gospel message.

"Make disciples":

This goes beyond simply making converts. It means teaching people to become committed followers of Jesus who actively learn from and imitate his life and teachings.

"Baptizing them":

This is a symbolic public declaration of a new follower's faith and new identity in Christ.

"Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you":

This instruction emphasizes ongoing education and spiritual growth for new believers. The process of discipleship is a long-term commitment that leads to a transformed life.

"And surely I am with you always":

This promise assures believers that they are not alone in their mission. Christ's presence and the power of the Holy Spirit empower them for the task.

How Christians fulfill the Great Commission

While it can involve traditional overseas missionary work, fulfilling the Great Commission is also a charge for every believer in their everyday life. Some ways to participate include:

Sharing the Gospel:

Christians are encouraged to share their faith with those in their personal sphere of influence, such as family, friends, and colleagues.

Serving others:

Demonstrating the love of Christ through actions and service can open doors for meaningful conversations about faith.

Local and global missions:

Engaging with mission work in one's own city or supporting missionaries who work internationally is a key part of the commission.

Prayer:

Praying for the spread of the Gospel and for missionaries around the world is considered a vital form of participation.

Discipling new believers:

Mentoring and nurturing new believers to help them grow in their faith is central to the command.
